École en Santé (Healthy Schools)
A School Initiative
École en Santé takes a coordinated and general approach to school-based promotion and prevention. This is achieved by a set of actions cohesively performed by various participants and partners of the school, who work together as a team, and who are concerned about the educational success and health and well-being of young people. The initiative is general when it focuses on key factors of youth development at various levels, at the same time, and through a combination of appropriate actions.
- The key factors are twofold:
- Individual: self-esteem, social skills, lifestyles, healthy and safe behaviours
- Environmental: school environment, family environment, community environment, preventive services
- Initiatives are performed at various levels, either with the young adult, the school, the family, or community, and must reinforce each other and be complementary.
- The initiatives are diversified. They relate to activities, services, programs, policies, or regulations that may positively impact the key factors of youth development using different levels of intervention.
The initiative is coordinated when it focuses on several factors at several levels:
- School management and staff;
- Members of the governing board of the establishment;
- Managers and professionals of the school commission;
- Parents;
- Managers and stakeholders of community, municipal and socio-economic organizations;
- Managers and stakeholders of the Health and Social Services Centre and the Public Health Department are invited to work together to plan and perform cohesive actions in a coordinated and harmonious manner.
The initiative is planned from the school. This means that the school plays a central role in implementing the initiative while marshalling community resources. The school is the best place to coordinate partners and to integrate policy instruments because, next to their family, it is the second largest living environment for the young.
